A lighthouse, is a type of tower with a bright light at its top, and could be equipped with a fog horn. Such a tower is often located at an important or dangerous place of travel on water. But, what is the purpose of a lighthouse?
According to https://oceanservice.noaa.gov/facts/lighthouse.html, Lighthouses "can be found on rocky cliffs or sandy shoals, on land, on wave-swept reefs in the sea, and at entrances to harbors and bays. They serve to warn mariners of dangerous shallows-perilous rocky coasts, and they help guide vessels safely into and out of harbors."
These structures serve two specific purposes: 1) Stop, Danger, Do Not Travel this Direction (think rocky shallows), or 2) It is Safe to Come This Way ( think entrance to a harbor). In either case, the lighthouse provides guidance to help the traveler safely navigate his or her way.
Wouldn't it be great if there were lighthouses in our personal lives to help us find safe passage? All of us get stuck from time to time along this arduous human journey. We can find ourselves (at times of great stress) indulging bad habits, procrastinating - for varied reasons, and self-sabotaging our greatest dreams. That is when we should look for a personal lighthouse.
While I am a coach, this is not meant to be a self-serving promotion. Rather, it is intended to encourage you, if you find yourself in a personal or professional funk, to find a mentor, counselor, or coach to help you safely navigate your way forward. There are a great number of methodologies, models, and resources available today to help guide you out of the fog.
Here are just a few I have learned from along the path:
